1) If you are using fiberglass to add items to your dolphin please keep these things in mind:
2) If you are using tiles or mirror on your dolphin, please keep these things in mind:
We have had good luck using GE Silicone II adhesive. It comes in a tube similar to caulk and also small tubes. This expands and contracts when exposed to heat and cold.
If you are using mirror on your dolphin, We suggest using un sanded grout when grouting your project. This will prevent scratching of your mirrors. Be sure to use adhesives and grout suited for exterior use not interior.
3) Please keep in mind when attaching objects to your dolphin sculpture that anything that can be attached can also be removed. Use high quality adhesives, fiberglass resin will work best. This will provide the strongest bond to your fiberglass sculpture.
4) Before painting your dolphin we recommend that you lightly sand the surface of the dolphin before applying any paint. This will help the paint adhere to the surface. When considering paint to use on your dolphin, we suggest using an exterior grade paint when at all possible. There are commercial grade exterior paints available. These are the best. (DON"T FORGET TO CHECK AT YOUR LOCAL PAINT OR HARDWARE STORES FOR MISMATCHED PAINT. These can usually be found for substantial discounts if not free. Pigments can be added to achieve the color you desire. Home Depot, Lowe's, Taylor's and many local paint stores all have mismatched and oops paints for sale.
5) A MINIMUM OF TWO COATS of exterior grade varnish that is non-reactive, non-toxic, UV resistant and waterproof is required on all painted sculptures. This can be in matt, semi-gloss or gloss finish. This step is critical to the ultimate durability of your dolphin sculpture.
If during your design process you have any questions about material etc. Please feel free to e-mail the committee at adolphinspromise@hotmail.com, we will help in any way we can. Good Luck and have fun with your dolphin designs.
